Biography

Born in 1915, Pandharpur (Maharashtra), Husain was a self-taught artist. He began his career as a painter and designer of cinema hoardings, toys and furniture in Mumbai in 1937. He got noticed in 1947 when he won an award at the annual exhibition at the Bombay Art Society and received an invitation by F.N.Souza to join the Progressive Artists’ Group. The Government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 1955; Padma Bhushan in 1973 and Padma Vibhushan in 1989. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha in 1986. He was a special invitee along with Pablo Picasso at the Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil in 1971. He has held several solo shows and participated in major group shows including Venice Biennale, Paris; Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil; Tokyo Biennale; Hirschhorn Museum, Washington D.C.; Royal Academy of Arts & Tate Gallery, London. ‘Art & Cinema on Husain’ by Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi is amongst the many publications that have been published on the artist. He has been making films since 1967 including the documentary ‘Through the Eyes of the Painter’ which won the Golden Bear at the International Film Festival at Berlin, 1967; ‘Gaja Gamini’, 1999 and ‘Meenaxi - A Tale of Three Cities’ in 2004. He lives and works in London.
