Biography

Born in 1925, Jhelum (Pakistan), Gujral studied at Mayo School of Arts, Lahore (1939-44) and then joined Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai for his Diploma in Fine Arts (1944-1947). In 1952 he went to Palacio Nationale de Bellas Artes, Mexico to study Mural Techniques. He has been awarded with National Award thrice in 1958, 1959 and 1974; the ‘Order of the Crown’ by the Belgian Government in 1983; ‘Life Time Achievement’ by Mexico’s Da Vinci Foundation International award in 1991. He is a recipient of ‘Desikottama’ in 1998 from Visva Bharati; ‘Padma Vibhushan’ by Government of India in 1999; ‘Order of the Aztec Eagle’ conferred by President of Mexico in 2006. Along with several solo shows held throughout his long career he has participated at Mexico City, New York, London, Montreal, Rome, Chicago & Stockholm among others. Several books on his works include an autobiography ‘A Brush with Life’. In 2006, the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi organised a Retrospective of his paintings, sculptures, drawings and architecture and released a book on him, ‘An Artography’. He lives and works in New Delhi.
