Statement

I visited China on a scholarship and was thoroughly inspired by my direct encounter with traditional Chinese masterpieces and the technique of calligraphy. The vastness and monumentality of contemporary Chinese landscape --- and the throbbing life and disciplined rigour in Chinese urban life --- were the other inspiring factors. Since my return to India, I am passing through a process of rediscovery of my own situation and location, based on the immensely transforming experience in China. Though currently based in semi-rural Santiniketan, I have tried to resume my former interest in urban structures, which is now mediated through my experience of the Far East. The experience of constant transformation in the urban ambience gives a queer feeling of impermanence and transience, of flux and flow, whereby nothing ever appears to remain constant. My intention has been to communicate and express this existence-in-flux through the very process of paint application and the character of the forms as they emerge in my images --- their textural vibration, and transition from form-to-form, whereby any possibility of fixed immobility is replaced by a volatile and potent state of perpetual transformation.
