Biography

Manjaris works fore mostly are verbiage of thoughts, where the text and forms move beyond their perceptual meanings offering a more challenging and enriching experience in production and perception of meaning. Trained as a printmaker and having experimented with various mediums: etching, pen and ink drawings, paper assemblage, papier mache and recently acrylic on canvas; she almost sculpts in paint to bring out a fantastic texture and three- dimensionality.

Born in 1963, Manjari Chakravarti received her B.F.A. (1988) and M.F.A. (1990) in an earthly environment of Kala Bhavan, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan with subjects: Printmaking and Art History.

She has received several Awards, Scholarships and Fellowships, prominent among which are Junior Fellowship for Outstanding Artists in the Field of Visual Arts, by the Department of Culture, Ministry of Human Resources Development (1998-99); UGC National Level Test for Junior Research Fellowship and Eligibility for Lectureship [NET] (1991); Awarded for writing and illustrating a book Green is beautiful, by Childrens Book Trust, New Delhi (1990); National Merit Scholarship, by the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (1988); Roopkrishna Book Award, Kala Bhavan, for highest aggregate in the first year of specialization (1985) and Kala Bhavan Merit Scholarships consecutively for five years (1984-88) and in 1990.

She has held her solo exhibitions at Art Heritage, New Delhi (1994); Galerie 88, Kolkata (1999) and Ecriture at Gandhara Art Gallery, Kolkata (2007). Among the long list of her participations in group shows, camps and art events, held in different parts of the country and internationally, prominent are Synchrome 4 organized by Akar Prakar, Kolkata and Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai (2008); Mission Greenscape, organized by BNHS Art Auction House, Mumbai (2008); Art Camp at Egypt and Istanbul organized by Gandhara Art Gallery (2007) * Art Workshop for Children at Khoj (2007)l; Emerging India, held at Henry Moore Gallery, Royal College of Art, London, organized by Art Alive, New Delhi (2007); Surfaces and Textures, by Ganges Art Gallery and Gallery Espace (2007); Intimate Thoughts, Pristine Fables, a Group show curated by Pranabranjan Roy, presented by Aakar Prakar Art Gallery, Kolkata (2007); Novel Notations: A Diverse Spectrum of Subjectivities, at Hyderabad (2006); Versions: Artists of West Bengal, Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata (2005); Time and Space, by Benson & Hedges and Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai and Galerie 88, Kolkata (1999); Reaching Out. Her works are part of several prestigious public and private collections in India, Japan, USA, UK, Germany, France, Czechoslovakia and other countries.

She presently works and lives in Santiniketan, West Bengal.
