Biography

Born in 1904, Kolkata, Benodebehari Mukherjee studied at the renowned Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan where he was a student of Nandalal Bose from 1917-24. He was a teacher, librarian and curator at Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan from 1925-49. Appointed Professor at Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, 1958-70, he was elected Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1970. Later the artist was honoured by the Government of India with Padma Vibhushan in 1974 and conferred with the honorary doctoral degree of Desikottama by Visva Bharati in 1977. Chitrakar, a collection of his writings won the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award and the Rabindra Puraskar in 1980. He exhibited his works in many solo and group shows across India and abroad. Satyajit Ray made a documentary on him called The Inner Eye in 1972. He passed away in 1980.
