Biography

Born in 1949, Pune (Maharashtra), Patawardhan is a self-taught artist who studied medicine (Radiology) from Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. His first solo show was held in 1979 followed by several one-man and group shows in India and abroad. These include ‘India: Myth & Reality–Aspect of Modern Indian Art’, Museum of Modern Art, Oxford & ‘Contemporary Indian Art’, Royal Academy of Art, London in 1982; ‘Contemporary Art of India: The Herwitz Collection’, Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts in 1995; ‘Festival of India’, Paris, 1986; ‘Icons of the Millennium’, Mumbai, 1999; and ‘Century City’, Tate Modern, London, 2001. His work, along with the work of fellow painter Gieve Patel, was shown in 2006 at the Bose Pacia Gallery, New York. A monograph on thirty years of the artist’s work, ‘The Complicit Observer’ written by Ranjit Hoskote was published in 2004. He lives and works in Thane, near Mumbai.
