Biography

Born in 1943, Simla (Himachal Pradesh), Vivan Sundaram completed his BA in Fine Arts from M.S. University, Baroda 1965. He joined Slade School of Art, London to complete his post graduation after receiving the Commonwealth Scholarship in 1966. He is a founder member and trustee of Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust and also the initiator of the Kasauli Art Centre. A photographer, sculptor and installation artist, he is also a Visiting Professor at the Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He has held over 25 solo shows across India and abroad and participated in many group shows at Tokyo Biennale, Japan, 1984; II Asian Art Show, Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan, 1985; II & IV Biennale Havana, Cuba, 1987 & 1991; II Asia-Pacific Triennale of Contemporary Art, Brisbane, 1996; Kwanju Biennale, 1997; Joahannesberg Biennale in 2000; Tate Modern, London, 2001; Shanghai Biennale, 2004; Queens Museum, New York and Tamayo Museum, Mexico City, 2005. He created 37 photomontages from Amrita Sher-Gils family archive for the book Re-take Of Amrita: Digital Photomontages in 2001. He lives and works in New Delhi.
