Biography

Born in 1933, Ulpur (now in Bangladesh), Sarbari Roy Chowdhury completed his Diploma in Sculpture from Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata in 1956. He studied art under the guidance of Prof. Prodosh Das Gupta and Prof. Sankho Chaudhuri at Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda on Government of India Cultural Scholarship from 1957 to 1959. In 1960 he started teaching at the Indian College of Arts & Craftsmanship, Kolkata in the Department of Sculpture. He moved to Italy after receiving the scholarship by the Government of Italy to study sculpture at the Academia de Belle Arte, Florence in 1962. He won several awards including the ‘Shiromani Puraskar’ by Asian Paints in 1998; ‘Gagan-Abani Puraskar’ by Visva Bharati University, 2004; ‘Abanindra Puraskar’ by Government of West Bengal, 2005. His works have been exhibited in many solo and group shows at New York, Paris. He lives and works in Santiniketan
