Biography

Born in Pattiam, Malabar, Valsan studied at College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai (1976), Faculty of Fine Arts, M. S. University, Baroda (1979) and Ecole Nationale Superior Des Beaux Arts, Paris (1986). Amongst his selected solo shows are: ‘New clearage: Retrospective as Artwork’, New York (2007); ‘Retrospective as Artwork’ at Bangalore and Germany (2005), and Dublin (2004); ‘Drainage: Rain Harvesting Sculpture’, New Delhi (2004); ‘Stone Age and Bronze Age’, Chennai (1989). Also participated in many group shows, the selected ones are: ‘Santhal Family: positions Around an Indian Sculpture’, Belgium (2008); ‘Souvenirs D’en France’, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (1993); ‘Rim Bound: An Indian Summer’, Traveling Show, showcased at Hyderabad, Pondicherry, Chennai and Besancon in 1992; ‘Envelope’, Russia consulate, Chennai (1973). He is recipient of several honors and awards, Sixth Bharat Bhavan Biennale of Indian Contemporary Art Grant Prize (1996); International Fellowship Award and Visitor ship in Visual Arts, MAAA and USIA; National Academy Award, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (1990); French Govt. Scholarship to study and resident artist at Des Beaux Arts (1986) and Outstanding Junior Fellowship for Artist in the Field of Plastic Art, Ministry of Education, New Delhi (1984-86). He presently lives and works in Kerala.
