Statement

Debasish’s subtle watercolours and acrylic on canvas bring together the world of urban dystopia and the charm of the mofussil town. His inventive imagination creates visual situations where a cycle rickshaw driver carries in his rickshaw his world, his home his dreams and his family. In another instance the men’s urinal is connected to a labyrinth of wispy lanes at the top of which stand several individuals almost like sentinels. In a third canvas people plunge into a pool of azure sky held buoyant above the city by parachutes—another metaphor for middleclass optimism and dreams. Spanning Kolkata, Baroda and sometimes New Delhi, Debasish‘s works bring together the many India’s that exist in a continuum. His relationship with the internet is a tacit one, for although he goes through the motions of being part of the virtual world, his works draw their inspiration more strongly from ‘reality’.
