Biography

Born in 1924, Saligaon, Goa, Souza completed his Diploma in Painting from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai in 1940-45.  He went on a study tour if Italy in 1960 on Italian Government Scholarship.

He was one of the co-founders of the Progressive Artists' Group in 1947, along with M.F. Husain, Raza, Ara and others and also a leading member of the Indian avant-garde.

Souza was not only a prolific painter but also a writer, poet and even philosopher. It was in 1949 when he moved to London, one of his autobiographical pieces, ‘Nirvana of a Maggot’, was first published in Encounter, an English magazine. Both his painting and writing received much acclaim.

He has exhibited his works all over the world in several solo & group shows. His works are in the collections of the Tate Gallery, London and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. He has also exhibited at the Gallery Creuze, Paris, in 1954; at Arts 38, London, in 1975 and 1976, and at Bose Pacia Modern, New York, in 1998.

In 1967 he migrated to New York where he received the Guggenheim International Award. 

F.N. Souza passed away in March 2002.
