Biography

Augustine Thilak is a multifaceted artist who works in different mediums being a painter, photographer and a performing artist. His serene and contemplative work like his persona weave together the duality of man's existence, namely the contradictions in life as presence absence, material spiritual, visible invisible, positive negative, animate inanimate, which offers opportunities in exploring at a personal level and eventually to rise above by connecting with his spiritual inner self. The simplicity of the visual language forms the premise of his inherent philosophy that attracts the viewer to hold dialogue with his works. In his present series, he has engaged with photography. The large number of photographs that he has captured on his many sojourns to the mountains and in other parts of the country forms his core corpus, which is saved in his computer. He scrutinizes these photographs at leisure, and when something attracts him, he enlarges the particular detail from it, which becomes the subject for his art. He digitally prints the detail on canson paper and works over it in water colours the subtle landscape of the Himalayan ranges, bringing materially to paper his experiences of trekking and the spiritual connect he has with the mountains. His ascetic compositions and simplicity of vision imparts a powerful dimension to his works that incidentally corresponds to his persona. A mysterious and enigmatic aura marks a saliency of his works. Yet he brings about this change of unknown through his misty vaporous water colour technique that ultimately transforms his works to offer a different spirited appeal.
