Biography

Manjula Selvam is a fashion design graduate born and brought up in Auroville. She diversified from fashioning garments and accessories to create Textile Art for wall display. Her basic premise is to give new form to fabric displacing its pragmatic function to artistically transform to a work of art. The waste and remnant fabric from her studio take on different avatars as flowers, plaits, globules in a variety of shades and tones constructing through these forms her imagery that flows subconsciously. A physical intensive activity, she stitches every element on the canvas background firmly, and executes the work herself without any assistance. She has a fine and subtle sense of colour combination that brings into play kaleidoscopic tints and shades that appears like nature on a cat walk. These fabric collages are also enhanced by beads and sequins. For Manjula transformation happens at the visual level when fabric is imaged to assume different forms and shapes, which she metamorphoses to mantle it with abstract character. Memories and forms transforms at a particular moment in her creations.
