Biography

Gubendhiran K.’s artistic journey has been one of numerous challenges and hardships. It mandates to mention that he belongs to the stock of fishing community of a village of Veerampattinam in Puducherry. Brought up by the sea and with fishing as family profession, he had to face tremendous resistance from his siblings to move away from his madness of creating and working with art and take up a serious job that would offer him security. With the sea and fishing life internalized within the many layers of his subconscious, Guber when he encounters the canvas, the life by the sea emerges as dominant imagery. Hence fish becomes the protagonist and the leitmotif in his compositions. His visual language is hyper realistic and delineates human and other forms with miniature fishes conglomerating to create the desired effects. His sculptures are a translation of his paintings into three dimension. Using mixed medium he attempts in his paintings to create the illusionary three dimensional effects, but also uses other materials that offers visual textures, making his works surge with movement akin to the ebb and flow of the waters. The colours are somber and subdued but with an intensity perceivable in vegetative life under water. The predominant theme in his art is centered on life as the fish sellers. Though a certain naivety pervades his composition it remains symbolic of the spirited existence of the fisher folks who brave hardship of the capriciousness of the sea yet worship it as the soul of their existence. His moments of experiences are layered and transforms when he interfaces with life and his environment that is then realizes as an art form.
