Biography

Cheryl Goldsleger is an American artist, who through abstract means, attempts to address the current immigration crisis. Reconsidering Gaston Bachelard’s ideal of home(land) in The Poetics of Space, the underside of his premise is the current reality of homeland as an unstable, vulnerable place leading millions of people to emigrate in order to seek peace and shelter elsewhere. Using the diagrammatic imagery of maps from regions affected by the immigration crisis, Goldsleger overlays geometric drawings as metaphors for the boundaries, borders and constraints of society.

Cheryl Goldsleger exhibits internationally with her most recent exhibition, Vast Scale-Intimate Space included in the European Cultural Centre’s 2019 Art Biennale in Venice, Italy. Her works are represented in important museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, New York; the High Museum, Atlanta, Georgia; Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York; The Fogg Museum at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, Israel; The New Orleans Museum, New Orleans, Louisiana; the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York, and the Tel Aviv Museum, Tel Aviv, Israel among many other important public and private collections. She is a recipient of two, major USA National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. Her international residencies at the La Napoule Foundation in France and a US/France exchange fellowship in Paris have provided invaluable resources for her work. Her work has been discussed in an extensive list of publications including Art in America, Artforum and other notable journals. Cheryl Goldsleger is currently the Morris Eminent Scholar in Art at Augusta University in Georgia.
