Biography

Born in 1963. Ayisha Abraham lives and works in Bangalore, as an installation artist and short filmmaker. She studied painting at M.S. University, Baroda, in India and Rutgers University, new Jersey, United States (1995), and Whitney Independent Study Program, New York City (1992), before becoming an experimental filmmaker and installation artist. She has worked at the Srishti School of Art, Design, Technology, as a visual arts consultant since 1997 and is a member of the BAR1 (Bengaluru Artists Residency). She is currently Dean of School of Media Arts and Sciences at Srishti Institute.

Artist curator for the World Information City Exhibition, Bangalore, collaboratively organized by Net base, Vienna and Alternative Law Forum, Bangalore, Nov 2005.
Invited artist at the Khoj residency in Mumbai, June 2005 and Dharamshala 2012.

She has crafted a series of short experimental film’s from 8mm home movies she collected locally in her neighbourhood.

Her first film “Straight 8” (2005) was screened at a Srishti exhibition, Ars Electronica, Linz, Austria. Other short experimental films include “Amnesia”, 2001, Nepal. 2 minutes. “Alight at East Station, Bangalore, India, 1997, “The Lady with a Hat”, New York 1995. 7 Minutes. “Migration of Memory”, New York, 1992. 7minutes. One Way – one of six films for State of the World at the Directors fortnight, Cannes, 20 minutes, 2007.

 Her work has been shown at numerous international exhibitions and festivals including Artists Space, Tribeca, New York (1992); Franklin Furnace, New York (1993); Japan Foundation, Tokyo, (1997); British Council, New Delhi and across the UK, (1998); Eicher Gallery New Delhi, (1998); Galleryske, Bangalore (2003); ARS Electronica, Linz (2005); Mostra Internacional de Cinema,Sao Paolo (2008) ; and the Serpentine Gallery, London (2008/2009). Kunst Museum, Bern (2007/8); Anant Gallery, New Delhi, (2008), Tao Kashi Art Gallery, Kochi (2009); Art Gallery, Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo, Norway (2009); Mumbai, 2009; Samuha Artists collective (2010).
