Statement

While Abir trained formally as a studio sculptor, at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayaji Rao University, Baroda and then at Ecole des Beaux Arts, Caen , Normandie, France. He has been working with metal beaters and traditional crafts persons on large scale sculptures. After he returned from France Abir has been working onsite on many large and ambitious projects. Abir infuses a sense of modern abstraction into traditional forms and works mostly in bronze, copper and scrap metal. His works are inspired by organic forms like seeds, pods, trees and vines. He brings to them an innately humane quality and liveliness that relinquishes them from being mere decorative objects.  His tree series stands at nine feet tall and it bestows a presence and permanence to one of nature’s quickly diminishing natural resources. I knew of Abir’s work since college days but I rediscovered his work as a curator for this project when he posted pictures of his latest project on my wall on Facebook.

He received the Kerala Lalit Kala Akademi in 2007. Anil now lives and works in Baroda.

Statement

Anil’s slightly desolate landscapes evoke a meeting ground of the European masters and the Indian miniaturists. They are part tableaux, part study of nature. These landscapes are often peopled by comical, sometimes dry and witty characters that contemplate the folly of mankind. His dark humour comments on the global while it keeps in mind the colonial. Whether it is the black Taj Mahal, the famed rampaging elephant driven mad by the Indian summer, referenced from a Kota miniature, or the band of monkeys who have come upon a suitcase of clothes and appear to be trying them on; his brand of humour is dark. Anil is part of the ArtAlive Emerging Artists online community of artists and he sees the internet not just as a communication tool but as a medium of knowledge. He features some of the internet signage like ‘buffering’, ‘downloading’ and ‘wait’ on his canvases to indicate that he too is influenced by internet culture.

Debasish Dutta

Debasish Dutta

Debasish was also selected as the ‘Saffron Artist of the Month” in February 2010. He lives and works in Baroda.

Statement

Debasish’s subtle watercolours and acrylic on canvas bring together the world of urban dystopia and the charm of the mofussil town. His inventive imagination creates visual situations where a cycle rickshaw driver carries in his rickshaw his world, his home his dreams and his family. In another instance the men’s urinal is connected to a labyrinth of wispy lanes at the top of which stand several individuals almost like sentinels. In a third canvas people plunge into a pool of azure sky held buoyant above the city by parachutes—another metaphor for middleclass optimism and dreams. Spanning Kolkata, Baroda and sometimes New Delhi, Debasish‘s works bring together the many India’s that exist in a continuum. His relationship with the internet is a tacit one, for although he goes through the motions of being part of the virtual world, his works draw their inspiration more strongly from ‘reality’.

Suraj Kumar Kashi

Suraj Kumar Kashi

Biography

Born in June, 1976 in a semi-urban town of Jamui, Bihar, Suraj kumar kashi knew he wanted to be an artist since childhood. Armed with a Bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the Art College, Patna and a Master’s degree from College of Art, Delhi University in 2003, Suraj started out in an advertising world where, as an art director in Ogilvy & Mather, he churned out creative lines for many multinational brands. After two-and-a-half-years he realized his calling was always with the paint and brush. He chucked up his job and began painting full time. Sufi music and temples inspire his work. He lives in New Delhi. His maiden solo show was on landscape, held in Himachal Pradesh immediately after college.

Statement

Inside this vast universe there is "you," a diminutive part of what makes the universe. What surrounds the universe are different layers of things loosely termed good, bad and ugly. An artist is well aware of this reality.

Symbolic of this turmoil, Kashi's paintings take the form of surrealism capturing a real and imaginative state of the human mind. He continuously examines the tendency of inherent narcissism in humans and the effects it has on materialism through the issue of appearance versus reality. His works display worldly ambition and desire and the way in which such aspirations manifest into conflict with the inner self.  Gradually, desire becomes an endless struggle for each person who has come into this world. His series of works capture the unseen faces of people hidden underneath what appears to be beautiful yet treacherous facades.

The composition of his work draw from a multitude of experiences such as surrealism, the internal architectural designs of South Indian temples and Sufi music.

Vivek Gujral

Vivek Gujral

Biography

Vivek Gujral is a amateur photographer. His day job is at the enterprise software company OneShield India, where he is CTO. He loves simplicity in design, whether software or other disciplines involving wood, steel, bricks and mortar. Unsurprisingly, his photography focuses on architecture. While he would like to also like to take pictures of peoples' faces, he hasn't mustered the courage or the presumptuousness yet. He has bought the appropriate lenses in anticipation.
