Born in 1958 in New Delhi in the family of the late master of abstraction, J. Swaminathan, S. Harshavardhana completed Post graduation in Bio Science from The Birla Institute of Technology & Sciences, Pilani, in 1980 and a diploma in Business Management. He left his successful career as a bio scientist to pursue his passion for art, becoming a full-time practicing artist.
S Harshavardhana works predominantly on canvas and paper, creating geometric forms with primary colours. He also paints with his hands, giving masterly strokes and spontaneous action of colours and textures in his work, creating a lyrical harmony overlaid with the artistic view deeply inspired by tribal art and symbols.
Harshavardhana had his first solo show in 1997, and he had numerous solo and group exhibitions around the globe. The most recent among them are ‘Essence & Forms: A Celebration of Femininity, Faith and the Natural World’, at Anamkara Art, New Delhi (2025), ‘Serene’ at Art Alive Gallery, Delhi (2023), ‘Sense, Symmetry & the Sacred’ at Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai (2023), ‘Art Now’ series of four editions at Art Alive Gallery (2016-2019), solo at Galerie J Bastien Art, Brussels, Belgium (2014), ‘Ideations: Colour, Form, Dimension & Space | Recent Works of S. Harshavardhana (2012), The Georgia Museum of Art in 2006, 2D/3D Hong Kong (2009), Diverse Idioms, Hong Kong (2007), Seeking the Reality at Indigo Blue Art, Singapore (2007), First Biennale of contemporary Art, Romania in 2005, Arks Gallery, London (1997), and Bharat Bhavan Biennale of Indian Contemporary Art Bhopal (1996).
Harsha received many accolades, such as the Raza Foundation Award in 2006, Officers Arts et Letters, French Government in 2003 and Kalidas Samman by the Madhya Pradesh State Government in 1985.
He lives and works in New Delhi.
