Rini Dhumal, a distinguished print-maker & artist, unveils her recent collection of works in a show titled THE JAPANESE WIFE & OTHER TALES. A long time admirer of literature & cinema, Rini was deeply moved by Aparna Sen's film about a beautiful Japanese girl who falls in love with a Bengali school teacher through an exchange of letters. Her other inspiration also comes from Chitrangada, where Rituporno Ghosh deeply impressed her in the title role. These and her discoveries of people & distant places provide the visual reference for the present exhibition.

Her palette is deep & sombre shades of ochre, maroon & indigo set the mood for a suite of paintings that touch upon the loss of love & yearning for spiritual fulfillment. The dramatis personae are visualised against the deepening dusk or darkening skies, in moments of solitude. The Buddhist monks are in prayers, lost in meditation, while the other protagonists are pictured in postures that are dramatic & bold. In the midst of the works, The Japanese Wife stands apart, a picture of melancholic beauty.

Rini completed her Master’s in Painting from M.S.University, Baroda and studied under Bendre, Shankho Chaudhuri and K G Subramanyam, and then moved to Santiniketan, followed by Paris, where she met and trained with Krishna Reddy. Rini found her moorings at last, focusing on printmaking under Reddy’s tutelage.
