A Moment in the Monumental: Centre for Contemporary Art, Bikaner House

Art Alive Gallery is delighted to bring to you A Moment in the Monumental, a group exhibition celebrating 25 years of Art Alive Gallery curated by Kishore Singh at Centre for Contemporary Art, Bikaner House. A major publication and a film on the journey of Art Alive will be launched on the day of the preview. The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of parallel programs such as talks, walkthroughs, seminars and events that will take place during the exhibition.  A Moment in the Monumental is an exhibition of seminal works by thirty artists whose works respond to the continuum in India’s art history, spanning a century of art practice but reflecting a legacy that dates back over five millennia. Each work is a representation of this heritage, but it is also free of the burdens of tradition to craft a language that is independent of established vocabularies.   In this exhibition are modernists such as S.H. Raza, Krishen Khanna and Satish Gujral; intergenerational modernists such as Sakti Burman, Manu and Madhvi Parekh, K. Laxma Goud, Thota Vaikuntam, Veer Munshi, and Jogen Chowdhury; women artists Anjolie Ela Menon, Arpana Caur, Anupam Sud, Jayasri Burman, and Tara Sabharwal; abstractionists such as Akkitham Narayanan, S. Harshavardhana, and Yashwant Deshmukh; sculptors P.R. Daroz, S. Nandagopal, K.S. Radhakrishnan and Partha Dasgupta; contemporaries such as Shibu Natesan, Paresh Maity, Chandra Bhattacharjee, and Walter D’Souza; British Indian artists the Singh Twins; and outsiders with followings in India such as Maite Delteil and Senaka Senanayake.   Each of the artists selected for the exhibition has a distinctive style, each work (or suite of works) has been chosen to convey the theme of the exhibition: of how each artist and artwork is part of an ongoing process, but is also unique with a spirit of its own. Each work is part of the continuum of India’s history but also a maker of its own history.  “At Art Alive Gallery, we have always believed in presenting artists with strong individual voices and powerful creative practices.
