Shibu Natesan’s upcoming solo exhibition, Mirror Man, Mirror Me is a quiet introspection into the artist’s ongoing dialogue with gaze, both of the self and of his surroundings, rendered in one of the oldest and most versatile artistic mediums of watercolour. A renowned artist known for his nuanced works that captures the banalities of everyday existence with meticulous attention to light, shadow and atmosphere, Shibu Natesan delves deeper into his study in this new body of work. Through the intricacies of watercolour, which he handles with great precision, his visual vocabulary explores studies of self and others as part of an active dialogue, engaging with the discourse of the gaze - to look, and to be looked at. The title of the show, Mirror Man, Mirror Me is not just a play on how Natesan archives his personal past and present through the medium of painting but also emphasizes on the way his gaze mirrors the societal reflections, constructing the identity and character of his visual language. The duality of outside and inside is foregrounded in this body of work as the artist captures landscapes, portraits of people he encounters, still life and myriad aspects of the self. The landscapes emanate an ethereal feel, a delicate interplay of light and shadow that encapsulates the atmosphere of a place. The portraits, both self and other are rendered carefully, capturing the essence of the subject’s persona. The still life works, organically constructed, draw inspiration from the Impressionist masters. Natesan engages with the idea of art as a reflection of life. Painting in solitude, his inner reflections converge with external encounters to shape this body of work. In an age where identity, both personal and collective is increasingly constructed and redefined through digital means, Natesan’s visual language becomes a mirror to society at large. It invites the audience to take a moment of pause and reflect on the quiet intricacies of everyday life.
