SHOTS IN THE DARK “The monochrome people that I have drawn, often with their backs turned to the audience, and their dusty ‘riches,’ are parts of my consciousness that I lived with for a long time, perhaps privately. And now I feel free to own them on the platform of my work. As a hoarding painter in Calcutta of the eighties, I had a bird’s eye view of marginalised stream of humanity. From my high perch, the unspeakable almost seemed like normal, ‘life as usual.’ But, obviously, it wasn’t. Later, on firmer ground, my memories coalesced with my continued observations even as the optical perspectives changed. This set of charcoal drawings is a continuation of what I call, my shots in the dark - visual expressions of what has been gestating within me for ages. They are an extension of the chancy existences of those humans, who in my eyes, rise high from crowds.” - Chandra Bhattacharjee, Artist Art Alive Gallery is delighted to bring to you Shots in the dark, a solo exhibition of works by Chandra Bhattacharjee at Shridharani Gallery, Triveni Kala Sangam. In this series, Chandra Bhattacharjee turns his attention to those who often remain unnoticed within the fabric of everyday life. The exhibition presents a series of large-scale charcoal drawings that emerge from years of observing the people who inhabit his immediate surroundings - street dwellers, workers and neighbourhood characters whose presence quietly shapes the urban landscape. As a hoarding painter in Calcutta of the eighties, the artist had a bird's eye view of humanity where he encountered versions of his subjects. This series are drawn from life, much like the untamed wildernesses that he has been capturing in his practice. Rendered in his preferred medium of charcoal, these characters appear in fleeting moments of existence, suspended between visibility and anonymity. These solitary figures command attention through their quiet dignity, inviting viewers to pause and acknowledge lives that often pass unnoticed. In Shots in the dark, the artist embraces the directness of drawing, allowing the subjects to emerge with a sense of intimacy and presence. Along with the larger-than-life charcoal works, intimate mixed media works capturing ordinary objects rendered in his signature soft hues are part of the exhibition. Through these works, Bhattacharjee transforms ordinary encounters into moments of recognition, reminding us that every individual carries a story within them.
