Born in 1940 in Nizampur (Andhra Pradesh), K Laxma Goud is an Indian painter, printmaker, and draughtsman who works in a wide range of mediums such as etching, gouache, pastel, and sculpture. He completed his Diploma in Drawing and Painting from the Government College of Fine Arts and Architecture, Hyderabad, in 1963 and did his Post-Diploma in mural painting and printmaking at M. S. University, Baroda, from 1963 to 1965, where he worked under Professor K. G. Subramanyan.
Laxma Goud has moved from one medium to another with ease over the past years of his artistic career. His sculptures in bronze and terracotta are celebrated among the artistic community in India. Raw and potent, Laxma Goud paintings and sculptures exude a rustic energy and charm. Goud was known for his portrayal of eroticism, which is clearly evident in his early works from the 1970s. Laxma Goud’s love for the erotic lies in his life in the village, where taboos and inhibitions about sexuality are not so predominant compared to the urban society.
Laxma Goud’s paintings revolve around the coexistence of people, animals, and various forms of nature with the invocation of the animus and a psychological relationship between the male-female dichotomy. His distinct oeuvre reflects spontaneous and unrestrained passions which are free from the moralistic ethics of the urban middle class.
His women are often decorated in traditional ornaments and are clad in vibrant clothes, merging with their surroundings and shapeshifting into therianthropic forms. Village goats are a recurrent visual in Goud’s paintings, as his family had a herd of goats and buffaloes. His women are a representation of the Shakti, the supreme womanhood itself.
Laxma Goud was the Head of the Department at the Sarojini Naidu School of Performing Arts, Fine Art and Communication, the University of Hyderabad for several years. He was appointed as a Graphic Designer at Doordarshan for 15 years.
He had his first solo exhibition in his hometown in 1965 and has held numerous exhibitions since then. Some of his important exhibitions include ‘I Want to Seduce with My Line’ at Art Alive Gallery in 2012; Laxma Goud: Solo Exhibition at Aicon Gallery, New York (2009); ‘Laxma Goud 40 years: A Retrospective’, at Aicon Gallery, New York (2007); the Tokyo Print Biennale, Japan, 1976; Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil, 1977; and the Royal Academy of Art, London, 1982.
His works have been part of group exhibitions held in ‘Celebrating the Modernists of Indian Art’ at Thapar Gallery, Delhi (2025); ‘The Masters & The Modern: An Amalgamation of the Old & New World Classic’ at Gallery G, Bengaluru (2024); New York in 2011-12; Galerie 88 Kolkata in 2007; Priyasri Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2006; by Saffronart and Apparao Galleries, Los Angeles, 2001; Saffronart and Pundole Art Gallery, New York, 2001 and 2002; Centre of International Modern Art (CIMA), Kolkata, and the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), New Delhi, 1993; ‘Festival of India’, Geneva, 1987; and Worcester Art Museum, 1986.
