Yashwant Deshmukh’s Horizons of Memory presents a selection of works which continues his long-standing engagement with the metaphysical qualities of space, architecture and forms. A faint whisper of memory pervades the picture planes inviting the viewer into a meditative space where stillness has a notable presence and forms take precedence. Through abstracted architectural elements and muted visual language, Deshmukh constructs a world where the visible and invisible, the inhabited and the imagined, quietly converge. Deshmukh’s oeuvre is evocative of the banal interiority of everyday life, spaces devoid of any human interaction yet suggesting shelter, solitude, and silence. Although the objects that find solace in this body of work are familiar to the artist and to the viewer, there is a distinct play of geometric forms unfolding across the pictorial space. The essence of a gentle breeze caressing a curtain, the stark shadow of an antique lamp, the myriad forms of mundane interiors, all find expression in Deshmukh’s visual language. According to the artist, it is not a nostalgic approach where he draws from memories of his childhood in the native place of Vidharbha but an intense fascination with the different layers, visual sensibility of objects and traces of his memory that surround him. He reads and expresses the memories not as stories but as atmospheres. The doorways, walls and voids are reminiscent of architectural structures but are also evocative of sanctums or meditative spaces that invite introspection. Beneath the subdued palette and minimalist compositions lies a complex interplay of memory and personal resonance. The absence of figures in his work furthers the contemplative stillness, allowing viewers to project their own presence into these spaces. In a world saturated with spectacle and speed, Deshmukh’s work is an invitation to pause and reflect. The artist’s engagement with materiality also resurfaces in Horizons of Memory. The textured surfaces depicted in the architectural renditions of doors and crevices, modulation of tones and the subtle gradations of light evoke a tangible sense of space where the forms are not merely visual but can be felt as a sensory experience in great depth. For Deshmukh, the main element of his visual vocabulary is the stark and bare appearance of an object that gets transformed in an abstract manner in his paintings. The process of transformation is meditative, both conscious and subconscious where he engages with distinct materials for creative expression. In Horizons of Memory, Yashwant Deshmukh does not offer grand narratives or overt symbolism. Instead, he shapes intimate terrains where memory, time and experiences find representation in the quiet resilience of form and stillness.
